Sleep Apnea

pic_herbst_appliance0000We are now offering a new service to help patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions and stoppage of breathing during sleep. To diagnose this sleeping disorder a sleep study by a board certified sleep medicine doctor is needed. The gold standard for treatment of sleep apnea is CPAP machine. Some people are not able to tolerate this treatment. Oral appliance therapy is another way to treat sleep apnea. This is done by the use of a removable oral appliance that is designed to advance the mandible. By advancing the mandible the tongue is brought forward to help open the airway. There are different appliances that can accomplish this. It is important that any appliance can be adjusted to the best position to prevent or at least to improve snoring and improve breathing.

The Herbst Appliance has been proven effective for chronic snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea sufferers. This appliance allows patients some lateral and vertical movement without disengaging the appliance. Also, if the initial position does not provide anticipated relief, the mandible can easily be moved forward in small increments.
